Our History

The HomeOwnership Center was founded to fill a critical gap in rural housing resources. Over the years, we’ve helped thousands of people buy homes, improve credit, and build financial futures. Today, we remain committed to serving a wide range of customers and helping them through the life of their homeownership journey.

1998
Homeownership Center ribbon cutting.

The HomeOwnership Center began as a program of the Randolph County Housing Authority (RCHA) and became a legally independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in June 1998.

2001
NeighborWorks Membership Charter certificate.

HOC joined NeighborWorks America as a chartered member, becoming part of a national network of nearly 250 nonprofit organizations focused on affordable homeownership and community development.

2003

The organization moved from shared space within the RCHA building to its own renovated historic home on Randolph Avenue in Elkins.

2004

West Virginia Housing Development Fund Top Producing Housing Lenders of 2006 award certificate.

Recognized by the West Virginia Housing Development Fund as a top-producing nonprofit housing lender.

15 year celebration.

Marked 15 years since incorporation, continuing to expand services and impact.

2017
Accepting 2017 Rising Star award.

Honored by Fahe, a membership organization supporting non-profits dedicated to building a thriving Appalachia, as its Rising Star Lender of the Year.

2018
20th Anniversary cake.

Celebrated 20 years of service, assisting nearly 1,000 homebuyers and providing counseling and education to more than 3,200 customers.

2020
Accepting 2020 USDA award.

Recognized by the USDA Rural Development office and its State Director for “outstanding work in support of helping rural West Virginians realize the dream of homeownership.”

2022

Began offering week-long Financial Education classes to senior Civics classes at local high schools and youth training programs.

In just the last five years, we have helped to create over 225 new homeowners, we educated nearly 230 new home buyers and provided financial counseling to over 850 households.
